Chain-of-Thought Prompting

Chain-of-thought prompting asks a language model to work through a problem in intermediate steps before giving its final answer, which often improves accuracy on reasoning tasks.

What is Chain-of-Thought Prompting?

Introduced in a 2022 Google paper, the technique helps with maths, logic and multi-step questions. Reasoning models now produce such step-by-step reasoning by default after being trained to do so.

How it works

The prompt includes a request such as "think step by step" or worked examples showing the steps.
