Emergent Abilities
Emergent abilities are capabilities that appear in larger AI models but are absent or very weak in smaller ones, such as multi-step arithmetic or in-context learning.
What is Emergent Abilities?
Emergence makes it hard to predict what a new model will be able to do, which is a reason for pre-deployment capability evaluations. Some researchers argue that apparent sudden jumps partly reflect how performance is measured.
How it works
Abilities are observed by testing models of increasing size on the same benchmarks.
