Home Gateway (HGW)
A home gateway, also called a residential gateway, is the customer device that connects home equipment to the broadband network and provides routing, addressing and other network services.
What is Home Gateway (HGW)?
A home gateway ONT combines the fibre terminal with router functions. It sets up the internet session (for example using PPPoE or DHCP), shares one public address among home devices using network address translation (NAT), and handles multicast for IPTV through IGMP snooping. It may also include Wi-Fi and phone ports. This gives the provider fine control and management of services at layer 3.
