Open-Weight Model
An open-weight model is an AI model whose trained weights are published so anyone can download, run and modify it, even if its training data and code are not released.
What is Open-Weight Model?
Examples include Meta's Llama and many models from Mistral, Alibaba's Qwen and DeepSeek. Open weights support research, competition and local deployment but cannot be recalled and can have safeguards removed. The EU AI Act gives some exemptions to free and open-source models without systemic risk.
How it works
The developer releases weight files under a licence; users run them on their own hardware.
