Nations convened at the United Nations on May 12, 2025, to address the regulation of AI-controlled autonomous weapons, often termed "killer robots," amid their growing use in conflicts like Ukraine and Gaza. Despite increased global defense spending fueling AI-assisted military technology, progress on establishing binding international standards remains slow. Discussions under the Convention on Conventional Weapons (CCW) since 2014 have focused on potentially banning fully autonomous systems lacking meaningful human control, but no significant agreements have emerged. Experts warn that time is running out to implement safeguards to prevent dire scenarios involving these advanced lethal technologies.
