Shared Airspace Usage with Drones in Lancashire, UK

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has awarded a grant from its Airspace Modernisation Support Fund (ASF) to a consortium led by ANRA Technologies UK Ltd, in collaboration with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, Manna Drone Delivery, and Wing. This initiative aims to conduct the UK's first operational demonstration of multiple Uncrewed Traffic Management (UTM) service providers supporting overlapping Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone operations within shared airspace, directly contributing to the UK's Airspace Modernisation Strategy (AMS). Drawing on experiences from U.S. UAS Traffic Management implementations, the project will undertake live trials in Lancashire to validate interoperability, governance frameworks, and cooperative operating principles for safely managing both commercial and emergency service drone operations. The outcomes are expected to inform future UK UTM policies and support national scalability, including the development of a UK-specific Concept of Operations and governance framework. Additionally, the project will assess differences between U.S. and UK regulations to provide recommendations that align with the evolving UK CAA framework.
