UK Drone Rules from 1 Jan 2026

Starting from 1 January 2026, new UK regulations require anyone wishing to fly a drone or model aircraft weighing 100g or more outdoors to pass a free online theory test run by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in order to obtain a Flyer ID. This is a significant change from previous rules, which only required the test and Flyer ID for drones weighing 250g or more.

Additionally, if the drone weighs 100g or more and has a camera, the owner must also register with the CAA to get an Operator ID.

The rules aim to make drone flying safer and easier to understand while allowing for increased drone use across the UK. They apply to all ages: children under 13 need a parent or guardian to help them complete the test, and those 12 or younger must be supervised by someone over 16 when flying. Flying without the required IDs is illegal and can result in fines or, in serious cases, imprisonment.

The CAA estimates that up to half a million people—many of whom may have received drones as Christmas gifts—will be affected by these updated requirements.
