AI System under the EU AI Act

Under the EU AI Act, an AI system is a machine-based system designed to operate with varying levels of autonomy, that may adapt after deployment, and that infers from its inputs how to generate outputs such as predictions, content, recommendations or decisions that can influence physical or virtual environments.

What is AI System under the EU AI Act?

The definition is based on the OECD's. Capacity to infer distinguishes AI systems from simpler software that only follows rules defined by people. The European Commission has published guidelines on applying the definition.

How it works

Whether a product is an AI system is assessed against the definition's elements: machine-based, autonomy, possible adaptiveness, inference and outputs.
