Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Artificial intelligence is the field of building computer systems that perform tasks normally associated with human intelligence, such as recognising patterns, understanding language, making predictions and taking decisions.
What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
AI covers a family of techniques rather than one technology. Older approaches encoded human knowledge as explicit rules, while most modern AI learns patterns from data using machine learning. Regulators increasingly define an AI system by what it does: the OECD and the EU AI Act describe a machine-based system that infers from its inputs how to generate outputs such as predictions, content, recommendations or decisions, with some degree of autonomy.
How it works
A typical AI system is trained on examples, produces a model, and then applies that model to new inputs to produce an output. Its performance depends on the quality of the data, the design of the model and how it is deployed and monitored.
