Field Strength
Field strength is the intensity of a radio signal at a location, usually measured in millivolts per metre (mV/m) or decibels relative to one microvolt per metre (dBµV/m).
What is Field Strength?
Volts per metre expresses the voltage that the signal would induce across one metre of conductor. Broadcasters and regulators use field strength to define coverage and interference limits. Converting: dBµV/m = 20 × log₁₀(mV/m × 1000), and mV/m = 10^(dBµV/m ÷ 20) ÷ 1000. The electric field falls in direct inverse proportion to distance in free space, while power density falls with the square of distance.
