Maximum Likelihood (ML)

Maximum likelihood is a statistical method that picks the value most likely to have produced the data observed.

What is Maximum Likelihood (ML)?

In communications, maximum likelihood detection chooses the transmitted sequence of symbols that best explains the signal received. It gives the best possible performance but can demand a lot of processing, so practical receivers often use simpler approximations. In other contexts "ML" usually means machine learning.
