Tool Use

Tool use is the ability of an AI model to call external tools, such as a search engine, calculator, database or software API, to obtain information or take actions.

What is Tool Use?

Tool use, also called function calling, lets language models overcome limits such as stale knowledge or weak arithmetic and is the basis of AI agents.

How it works

The model outputs a structured request naming the tool and arguments; the application runs it and returns the result for the model to use.
