Application Layer

The application layer, layer 7 of the OSI model, provides network services directly to software applications.

What is Application Layer?

Protocols at this layer include HTTP for the web, SMTP and IMAP for email, DNS for name lookups, FTP for file transfer and SIP for voice calls. Firewalls and load balancers that inspect traffic contents are often called "layer 7" devices.
