Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS)
Beyond visual line of sight is drone flight in which the aircraft is flown beyond the remote pilot's direct sight, relying on instruments, links and detect-and-avoid measures.
What is Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS)?
BVLOS is essential for delivery, long linear inspections and emergency services, but needs strong safety cases. The UK CAA authorises BVLOS through the specific category and its trials of atypical air environments and segregated airspace, and in 2025 the FAA proposed Part 108 to normalise BVLOS operations.
How it works
Operators show how they will avoid other aircraft, through electronic conspicuity, detect-and-avoid or segregated airspace, and how they will keep reliable command and control.
