Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS)

A broadband remote access server is the network router that ends customers' broadband sessions and routes their traffic towards the internet service provider's network.

What is Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS)?

The BRAS (also written B-RAS) sits between the access and aggregation network and the IP core. It authenticates users (often with RADIUS), assigns IP addresses, applies policy and traffic shaping, and manages each consumer's internet session. In the cost model source it is described with Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. In newer networks the same role is often called a broadband network gateway (BNG).
