Central Office (CO)

The central office, known in the UK as the telephone exchange, is the building where an operator's access network meets its active equipment and the core network.

What is Central Office (CO)?

In an FTTH network, the central office houses the OLTs, the ODFs and the power supplies they need. It sometimes also contains parts of the core network. In copper networks it is where local loops end on the main distribution frame.
