Core Network (CN)

The core network is the central, high-capacity part of a telecoms network that switches and routes traffic between access networks and other networks.

What is Core Network (CN)?

Sitting behind the access network, the core carries aggregated traffic, connects calls and data sessions, and links to the internet and other operators. In a fibre-to-the-home design, the "core network area" includes the internet service provider's equipment, the telephone network (legacy circuit-switched or packet-based) and any cable TV head-end. In mobile networks the core also handles subscriber authentication, mobility and session management.
