Access Network (AN)

The access network is the part of a telecoms network that connects end users' premises or devices to the provider's core network.

What is Access Network (AN)?

In fixed networks the access network is the "last mile" of copper, fibre or coaxial cable between the customer and the local exchange or cabinet. In mobile networks it is the radio access network of base stations and their links. Because it is the most expensive part of a network to build and the hardest to duplicate, the access network is the focus of much telecoms regulation.
