Radio Access Network (RAN)

The radio access network is the part of a mobile network that connects devices to the core by radio, made up of base stations and their links.

What is Radio Access Network (RAN)?

The RAN includes the antennas, radios and baseband equipment at cell sites, and increasingly centralised or virtualised processing. It is usually the most expensive part of a mobile network to build. Open RAN initiatives aim to make RAN components from different vendors work together.
