Centralised and Distributed RAN (C-RAN and D-RAN)

In a distributed RAN, each cell site has its own baseband unit; in a centralised RAN, baseband processing for many sites is pooled at a central hub; virtualised RAN runs that processing as software.

What is Centralised and Distributed RAN (C-RAN and D-RAN)?

C-RAN saves equipment and allows coordination between cells but needs high-capacity, low-latency fronthaul. vRAN goes further by running baseband on commercial servers.
