Session Layer

The session layer, layer 5 of the OSI model, sets up, manages and ends communication sessions between applications.

What is Session Layer?

It handles matters such as opening and closing a dialogue, checkpoints and recovery. In the TCP/IP world these jobs are usually done inside applications or by protocols such as RPC or SIP, so the layer is rarely seen as separate.
