Transport Layer

The transport layer, layer 4 of the OSI model, delivers data between applications on different hosts, optionally guaranteeing order and reliability.

What is Transport Layer?

TCP provides reliable, ordered delivery with flow and congestion control, using segments. UDP offers fast, connectionless delivery of datagrams. SCTP is a further option used widely in telecoms signalling. Port numbers at this layer identify which application data belongs to.
